Last week I was called to a strata unit about maple (Acer palmatum) pruning. Routine branch pruning? Not so fast. String left on the tree for way too long had clearly choked off the top of the branch. Water and nutrient transport is restricted and everything above the branch eventually dies. It is critical to remove any strings or wiring on trees. Wires have the same effect.
All dead wood was removed on this Japanese maple; see the last photo. Now about the bird feeder hanging from the tree.....
